Time and a half for comp time is part of workplace compensation that employees receive after working beyond their usual hours or during a holiday or weekends. It is given in the form of time off in equal amount to the extra hours worked. During the calculation of comp time, one has to add time and a half for the extra hours worked. The following elaborates on how to perform the calculation for time and a half for comp time.
Comp time which is an abbreviated form of compensatory time refers to time off granted in place of overtime pay. In an event where an employee is required to work extra hours, the employer may opt to offer the employee comp time instead of paying the employee overtime rates. Here’s how to calculate the amount of comp time someone has earned:
1. Find out the employee’s hourly wage if he/she works under normal circumstances. Their total weekly wages should be divided by the hours they are expected to work in a week. For instance, if they make $1,000 per week and have 40 hours’ worth of work in a week, then their basic rate is $25 per hour ($1,000 ÷ 40 hours).
2. Calculate the overtime rate. As stipulated in federal labor laws, workers should be paid one and half times their normal wages for any work done beyond the regular working hours. To determine the overtime rate, you must multiply the regular rate by 1.5. In our example that would be 1.5 times $25 or $37.50 per overtime hour.
3. Track overtime hours worked. Record details of any hours that are done beyond 40 hours in a given work week. Federal laws have defined 40 hours as full-time.
4. An overtime hour should be multiplied by the overtime rate. For instance, extending the above example, let it be that the employee worked for 45 hours in the previous week. That is 5 hours of overtime. 5 hours x $37.50 overtime rate = $187.50 worth of comp time earned.
5. The $187.50 is equivalent to the 2.5 times the comp time ($187.50 divided by the regular $75 per hour = 2.5 hours). Hence, the employee gets a compensatory time of 2.5 hours for working 45 hours instead of 40 hours required by the law.
This calculation can be made regardless of the fact whether the company has weekly or bi-weekly or even monthly pay intervals. The approach to determining comp time is to first determine how many hours of overtime were worked above full-time and apply the time and a half rate. Comp time is useful for employees to have flexibility at work but it entails stricter recordation of hours taken and computation of the overtime.
